What Role Do Chinese Meridians Play
In Achieving Vibrant Health?

The Chinese Meridians were discovered more than 5,000 years ago and, unlike western medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treats the body as a whole.

The Chinese define health as the harmonious flow of chi (roughly translated as vital energy) between the different systems and organs of the body to create a state of balance.

When the energy meridians become unbalanced, stagnant or blocked through stress or other factors, a decline in health results which can lead to chronic conditions and eventually disease.

The Chinese feel that "Chi is an energy of both nutritive and cellular-organizational characteristics which supersedes the energetic contributions of ingested food and air".

This Chi or energy travels and circulates deep within the body via the energy meridians to all the cells and organs of the body.

There are 12 pairs of meridians with each pair associated with a different organ system or function.

The Twelve Main Chinese Meridians In Pairs

The paired meridians listed below also include the time of day for each meridian.

  • Lung (Lu) 3am to 5am and Large Intestine (LI) 5am to 7am
  • Spleen (Sp) 9am to 11am and Stomach (St) 7am to 9am
  • Heart (H) 11am to 1pm and Small Intestine (SI) 1pm to 3pm
  • Pericardium ℗ 7pm to 9pm and Triple Warmer or San Jiao (SJ) 9pm to 11pm
  • Kidney (K) 5pm to 7pm and Urinary Bladder (UB) 3pm to 5pm
  • Liver (Liv) 1am to 3am and Gall Bladder (GB) 11pm to 1am

Yin and Yang

When you look at the yin and yang symbol it's hard to determine where one part begins and the other ends.

It represents two opposing forces that underlie Chinese philosophy and medicine -- positive and negative, weak and strong, feminine and masculine -- and represents a different way of viewing the world compared to western philosophy.

There is a Chinese saying that "Yang without yin is like a horse without reins, and yin without yang is cold and miserable.

Yin and Yang are inseparable and interdependent and both are of equal value. But when either aspect of yin or yang is taken to the extreme it causes imbalance and symptoms of ill-health.

For example, yang qualities of doing and achieving without the balancing yin qualities of being receptive and grounded manifests as aggression, materialism and emotional outbursts.
